This is something I’ve been personally working hard on lately, with little success. Even after hosting Skeptics In The Pub for almost three years, and pursuing this idea of science communication as a degree, it’s still been very hit or miss approaching friends about their favorite pseudoscience.

The word empowerment is one often used around new-age and alternative circles. Just being able to do something, anything, is a powerful motivator. Sometimes that’s all they’re really after, a feeling of control.

I try as hard as I can to discuss the issue only, without threatening their entire frame of reference or belief system in the process. As soon as the scope of the argument starts to wander, or it becomes a debate rather than a discussion, I walk away and hope that in a few weeks they’ll come back with more questions.

Have any of you been able to help a family or friend avoid pitfalls? Please share your success in the comments!

Every time I try to take some kind of control over my body and love life, you two say I'm wrong!

ROB
Wylona, I care about you. I don't like the idea of you being cheated.
WYLONA
