Thanks for your patience while I took last week off. Even with the extra days, I only have HALF the pre-ordered hardcovers in the mail. It’s quite a process.
But this topic is important because it gets to the heart of why parents are so easily taken in by alternative medicine – the powerful need to do something.
Child have a cough? Oh, try this thieves oil. Fever? Put onions in their socks. In these instances they don’t shorten the duration of your child’s illness, but they do make the parent feel better for having tried regardless.
Antibiotics use are something I hear a lot about from my doctor friends – specifically how many parents DEMAND antibiotics even when they aren’t called for. Ear infections are a condition that other countries don’t treat with antibiotics, but the US still does.
Even when the doctor told us there was a 99% chance that antibiotics will do nothing for our daughter’s earache – we lasted a day before caving. Evidence and reason be damned.
What did the doctor say?
She has an ear infection, and it's probably viral.
Why did he give you antibiotics?
I'm only supposed to give them if she doesn't improve.
Why did you just give her one then!
I can't just do nothing, she'd crying!
